Two Architectures, Two Outcomes
Today your site most likely works like the left side: every measurement request travels from the user's browser to third-party servers and gets cut off along the way. The architecture we build is the right side: data goes to you first, then to the platforms.
Current state: client-side
- Safari (ITP) caps browser-set cookies at 7 days, in some cases 24 hours; your returning customer is counted as a 'new visitor'
- Ad blockers stop Meta Pixel and GA4 requests directly in the browser; those users never enter your measurement at all
- When a visitor clicks 'Reject' on the cookie banner, their conversion never reaches the ad platform in any form
- iOS in-app browsers, App Tracking Transparency prompts and private browsing modes silently cut off third-party requests
- The result: Meta and Google algorithms learn from incomplete data, lookalike audiences are built wrong, and your cost per conversion climbs
The architecture we build: server-side
- Data goes first to a server container on your own domain (e.g. data.yoursite.com) and is collected as first-party data
- Events reach Meta via the Conversions API (CAPI) and Google via the GA4 Measurement Protocol, server to server; ad blockers cannot touch this route
- Consent Mode v2 signals are processed on the server: consented users are measured fully, non-consented users through anonymous modeled data
- Cookie lifetime and Event Match Quality improve, so the platform algorithms learn from more accurate signals
- You control which data goes to which platform from a single point; the pixel sprawl ends
Are You Losing Data? 6 Symptoms
The loss rate varies from site to site, so we do not promise a blanket percentage; we measure it on your site. If two or more of the items below sound familiar, it is time for an audit:
- 1There is an obvious gap between the sales count in your Meta ads dashboard and your actual sales
- 2Direct traffic in GA4 is unexplainably high
- 3Your Event Match Quality score shows as 'Poor' or 'Fair' in the Meta dashboard
- 4You have a large iOS audience, yet iOS conversions barely show up in ad reports
- 5Your remarketing lists are much smaller than they should be
- 6Measured conversions dropped visibly after you added a cookie consent banner
Server-Side Tracking Setup
One-time, with a before/after comparison and a written handover report
$429excl. VAT, one-time
Setup scope (8 items):
- 1Audit of your current measurement: GTM, GA4, Meta Pixel, conversion events and data layer inventory
- 2Server container setup (server-side GTM on Google Cloud Run) connected to your own subdomain
- 3Meta Conversions API integration with deduplication against your browser pixels
- 4Server-side event stream via the GA4 Measurement Protocol
- 5Consent Mode v2 setup, synchronized with your consent management platform (CMP)
- 6Google Ads enhanced conversions activation
- 7Event Match Quality (EMQ) before/after comparison
- 8Written handover report: architecture, access credentials, maintenance instructions
The server container runs in your own Google Cloud account; we give you a written estimate of the monthly server cost based on your traffic before the setup. The infrastructure and the data belong to you.
Why This Can No Longer Wait
Three developments point the same way. First: Google has required Consent Mode v2 for personalized advertising in the European Economic Area since March 2024, and GDPR enforcement keeps consent banners on virtually every site your customers visit; set up incorrectly, conversion measurement and audience lists quietly shrink. Second: Apple squeezes tracking from two directions, with Safari's Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP) cutting browser cookie lifetime down to 7 days and App Tracking Transparency (ATT) suppressing identifiers across iOS; in any industry with a long decision cycle, returning customers simply fall out of measurement. Third: ad blocker usage has been rising for years, and those users never enter client-side measurement at all.
The bigger your ad budget, the bigger the bill for incomplete measurement. Feeding the algorithm partial data is like giving a driver directions with your eyes closed: the car moves, just to the wrong place. That is why we recommend this setup as the first step to clients who use our Google Ads and Meta ads management: fix the measurement first, then raise the budget.
On the technical side, we build everything on Google Cloud, connected to your domain and fully documented. The same team that runs the setup also does Core Web Vitals optimization, so the impact of measurement scripts on site speed is handled as part of the same setup.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is server-side tracking?
Instead of sending measurement data straight from the user's browser to platforms like Meta and Google, the data is first sent to a server container you control (server-side Google Tag Manager). There it is processed and filtered, then forwarded to the platforms server to server. The data is collected on your own domain as first-party data, so ad blockers and browser restrictions cannot intercept this route.
What is the Meta Conversions API (CAPI)? Isn't the pixel enough?
The Meta Pixel runs in the browser; when an ad blocker, Safari ITP or a cookie rejection kicks in, the event never reaches Meta at all. The Conversions API sends the same events from the server. The two are used together, with deduplication preventing double counting. Meta grades this matching in its dashboard as the Event Match Quality score; we compare that score with you before and after the setup.
How much does the setup cost, how long does it take, and who pays for the server?
The setup is $429 (excl. VAT) and is delivered with a report in 2-3 weeks. The server container runs in your own Google Cloud account; the monthly server cost depends on your traffic volume, is paid to Google, and usually lands in the range of a few tens of dollars per month for small to mid-traffic sites. Before the setup we give you a written cost estimate based on your traffic. Optional monitoring and maintenance is $69/mo, limited to a maximum of 5 clients.
What is Consent Mode v2 and why is it mandatory?
Consent Mode v2 is the framework that passes the user's cookie consent status to Google systems as standardized signals. Google has required it since March 2024 for personalized advertising and remarketing in the European Economic Area. Set up incorrectly, Google Ads conversion measurement and audience lists quietly degrade. In our setup, Consent Mode v2 is configured to stay in sync with your consent management platform.
Is this setup GDPR-compliant?
Server-side architecture does not remove consent management; it centralizes it. The consent a user gives or refuses is enforced identically at the server layer: no consent means no personal data is forwarded to the platforms. As part of the setup we deliver a data flow diagram documenting what is collected and where it goes. For your privacy policy and the legal assessment we recommend working with your own legal counsel; we handle the technical implementation side.
What happens to my existing GTM and pixel setup?
Your existing setup is not deleted; it is converted. We first build an event inventory, then route your browser tags through the server container, with deduplication preventing double counting. There is no measurement gap during the migration; the old and new flows run in parallel for a short period, and once verified, the old direct requests are switched off.
How will I measure the result?
With three indicators: the change in your Event Match Quality score in the Meta dashboard before and after setup, the closing of the conversion count gap between GA4 and your ad dashboards, and the event volume in the server container logs. The handover report includes the first measurement of all three; on the maintenance plan we track them monthly. Because the loss rate varies from site to site, we do not promise a percentage upfront; we measure it on your site.
