How fast the page responds when you tap a button. Long JavaScript tasks and heavy third-party scripts ruin this metric. It replaced FID in 2024; any guide still optimizing for FID is out of date.

Cumulative Layout Shift
Good: under 0.1
Our target: under 0.05
Content jumping around while the page loads. An ad pushing the button away right as you tap it is this metric at work. Images without defined dimensions and late-loading fonts are the main causes.
