The Brief

What was the goal?

The traditional "content blog" affiliate format is losing leverage in the AI Overview era. We needed a hybrid model that delivers both affiliate income and reusable tool value.

The Approach

Which methodology pillars I applied

I combined the Schema pillar (Product + Review + AggregateRating + FAQPage) and Distribution pillar (transparent affiliate disclosure + original tool data + brand mention tracking). Tools = entry point, affiliate = exit point.

The Build

Key decisions and tradeoffs

Architecture call: tools are free (no gating), comparison pages run affiliate. This reinforced the "helpful content" Google signal — free utility stays primary.

Every affiliate comparison page carries a Product schema + AggregateRating + Review chain. Real price and stock pulled from Amazon API daily — no "out of date pricing" signal.

Affiliate disclosure top-loaded on every page, right under the headline. FTC compliance + Google E-E-A-T double signal.

Honest Reflection

What I'd Do Differently

On launch I half-built the Amazon API integration — some products had prices entered manually. Three weeks later prices went stale, pages started showing as "out of stock", and we didn't catch it. Google ate a week of stale-pricing signals. Lesson: programmatic affiliate site pricing must run on a daily cron + Sentry alert.
